Brian D. Barnes:

THE PROVOCATIVE OSCAR WILDE

Edited and directed by Christopher Denys

In this evergreen vintage production, Brian portrays Oscar’s executor Robert Ross. Through anecdotes, letters and incidents Robbie gives a sympathetic and intimate insight into Wilde’s complex life: his dazzling wit, his fame, his ultimate downfall as a result of a hopeless infatuation for ‘Bosie’ (Lord Alfred Douglas), his resultant trial which led to two years imprisonment with hard labour for homosexual offenses, and finally his death in Paris. The narrative is interspersed with a whole gallery of colourful personages in which Brian reveals various facets of Wilde’s genius including the black humour of LORD ARTHUR SAVILE’S CRIME, the allegorical beauty of THE SELFISH GIANT and the forceful protest of THE BALLAD OF READING GAOL, plus his brilliance as a playwright in scenes from LADY WINDERMERE’S FAN and THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST.
